Aussie Slang

In the land down under, they have quite the plethora of unique slang – bloody hell, it’s like a language within itself! (You see what I did there? wink wink).   Just in case you ever go to Australia – which you should – at least now you’ll somewhat be able to understand what the native Aussies are saying, if you can make out what the words past their accents.  Or, maybe you’ll just be like me and not even care what the Aussies are saying because you’re too distracted by their hot bodies and beautiful faces.  What can I say?  They are HOT!

  • Bottle-O = liquor store
  • Capsicum = bell pepper
  • Not bad = good
  • Pokies = slot machines
  • Shandy = beer mixed with Sprite
  • Lemonade = Sprite
  • Off their head = they’re effed up
  • Togs = swimwear
  • Whinge = wine
  • Schooner = a 425 mL (15 fl oz) glass of beer (it’s the standard Aussie beer glass size – and it’s only 3/4 the size of a pint)
  • Middy/pot = small glass of beer (285mL)
  • Prezzie = present
  • Roadie = alcohol you take to drink in the car
  • Sickie = a sick day
  • Stubbies = beer in a bottle
  • Cannies = beer in a can
  • Couldn’t be bothered = didn’t feel like it
  • Telly = TV
  • Aircon = airconditioning
  • Avo = avocado
  • Chewie = gum
  • Iceblock = non-dairy popsicle
  • Kindie = kindergarten
  • Tomato sauce = ketchup
  • Thongs = flip flops
  • Swimmers = swimsuit
  • Ute = pickup truck
  • Hen’s night = bachelorette party
  • Buck’s night = bachelor party
  • Crack on = hit on
  • Missus = girlfriend/wife/female partner
  • Yankee = an American
  • Sick c*nt = a bad*ss
  • Buggered = tired/worn out
  • Cruisy = easygoing
  • Yewy = a U-turn
  • Chrissy = Christmas
  • Heaps = lots
  • Mobile = cell phone
  • No worries = you’re welcome/not a problem
  • Uni = university
  • Feed = food/meal
  • Keen = eager for/interested in
  • G’Day = good day
  • Mate = friend
  • Train = workout
  • Park = a parking spot
  • Dodgy = sketchy
  • Cheeky = audacious
  • Toilet = bathroom
  • Theater = operating room
  • Goon = wine bag
  • Barbie = barbeque
  • Kiwi = New Zealander
  • Good girl = (Americans only say this to their dogs, but Aussies use it for people too)
  • How you going? = How are you doing?
  • Skull = chug
  • Rubbish = garbage
  • Bubbla = drinking fountain
  • Holiday = vacation
  • Frothy = beer
  • Mozzies = mosquitos
  • Bogan = redneck/white trash
  • Keen for a feed = I’m hungry
  • Sunnies = sunglasses
  • Footy = rugby
  • Bloke = man
  • Brekky = breakfast
  • All good = it’s okay
  • Muck around = mess around
  • Arvo = afternoon
  • Jumper = sweatshirt
  • Playsuit = romper
  • Lollies = candies
  • Macca’s = McDonald’s
  • I reckon = I guess
  • Straya = Australia
  • Cheers = thank you/hello/no problem or basically anything
